Big Bazaar to launch “supermarkets-on-wheels”

Retail News India:  As Big Bazaar gears up for its mega Republic Day promotion, it is fitting out trucks to function as “supermarkets-on-wheels” so it can maximize its reach across the country.

For example, the retailer does not have a Big Bazaar store between Thane and Vashi in Mumbai, so they are placing one truck somewhere in between.

Officials have said that the annual five days of sale around January 26 were proving to be a logistical challenge for the company as almost one crore people visit its 220 stores during those days, more than four times the usual 16-24 lakh shoppers that visit their stores on normal weekends. The company has also decided to prune its ‘Sabse Saste 5 Din’ sales around the Republic Day to three days this year, but it is targeting the same amount of sales as they clocked in five days last year.

If the experiment is successful the mobile stores will become a permanent fixture during promotional events.
